How to disable Facebook's video autoplay on iPhone and Android

Facebook logo squareFacebook introduced their long-awaited video autoplay feature a few months ago, and apparently it’s been wreaking havoc with mobile data plans ever since. Autoplay is switched on by default, so when a video appears in your feed and you pause momentarily on it, the video will start to play.

Here’s the kicker: It’ll do this regardless of whether you’re on 3G or connected to wi-fi.

The fact is, if you’re downloading lots of video content over 3G, you’re going to very quickly hit the limit of your data plan. If you’re on a contract, you most likely won’t discover this until you get your next bill. Let me predict your next thought: how do I switch this autoplay feature off?

Are Facebook and Twitter killing off blogs and forums?

Facebook logoLisa and I have been talking quite a bit lately about the impact of Facebook and Twitter on other areas of the internet – specifically forums and blogs.

We formally shut down the Unreality TV Forum earlier this year because engagement had dropped right off. The only new members were spammers, determined to graffiti our site with all sorts of shady links. And since the forum software was on a stagnated platform (Simple Machines Forum), which was incredibly difficult to theme for and manage, we took the decision to shut the forum down.

How to grab a vanity URL for your Facebook fan page

Facebook logoWe maintain a couple of Facebook fan pages for Unreality TV and its sister site, Unreality Shout.

Now, I knew that it was possible to set up a vanity URL for your own account on Facebook (mine’s facebook.com/gerardmcgarry – don’t stalk me, I won’t follow you), but I just discovered today that it’s quite simple to set up a vanity URL or username for your Facebook fan pages.
